We will be offering a Yiddish reading circle moderated by Shane Baker beginning this Winter-Spring 2016. In 10 sessions starting Sunday, January 31, 2016, we will be exploring the prose works of Avrom Sutzkever, drawn primarily from his collection Di Nevue fun Shvartsapl (Prophecy of the Inner Eye). With round robin reading of pre-assigned pages and mutual explication of everything from vocabulary and grammar to cultural and historical elements reflected in the text, students will get a grasp on some of the most difficult but rewarding prose in the Yiddish language.

Language of instruction: Yiddish and English
Hopefully we’ll finish by Passover, but some classes might have to be made up at the end depending on bookings for the winter.
Renowned poet Avrom Sutzkever is the only writer to date to receive the Israel Prize for achievements in Yiddish literature. Raised in interwar Vilna Sutzkever was, by turns, a member of Max Weinreich’s Yiddish boy scout troupe
Di Binen, the renowned literary group Yung Vilne, the infamous partizaner book-rescue unit Di Papir-brigade. Having moved to Israel after the war, Sutzkever was founding editor of one of the all-time great Yiddish literary journals, Di Goldene Keyt, where many of the stories we’ll be reading were originally published.
NB: We’ll need a minimum of 8 students for the class to go forward, maximum of 10, so let me know if you’re interested and your preference (Sunday or Monday evenings). Payment will be due by Friday, January 15.
