In Their Own Tongue: Yiddish Writers on Film

• Presenting two of the seven “Monologues of Yiddish Writers”, an internationally-renowned series of documentaries produced by the Yiddish Forverts (Forward) Editor, Boris Sandler.
• In-depth interviews are intercut with historic photos and present-day montages of the inspirational origins and (at the time of the interviews) the ongoing work of two of these celebrated writers, Yosl Birshteyn and Avrom Karpinovitch.
• These films have been shown internationally to great acclaim to Yiddish- and non-Yiddish-speaking audiences alike.
• In Yiddish (with English subtitles) – a Yiddish infused with idioms and local dialects and a pithy way of perceiving the world — all of which is unique to those Eastern European towns and cities that comprised a once-flourishing 20th Century Yiddish Civilization and have since been wiped from the Jewish map.

BORIS SANDLER to LA to introduce this marvelous series.  A celebrated Yiddish writer himself who has written 14 books of poetry and fiction, he was born and raised in Belz, the Bessarabia region of what is now Moldova.  He began filmic interviews of renowned Yiddish writers in Israel and E. Europe as early as the 1990’s, and continues to do so today in order to bring their voices forward into our futures.
