Seminar in Yiddish Literature “Peretz, Bashevis, and the Anxiety of Influence”
6 sessions with Shane Baker examining “the father of modern Yiddish literature”, Y.-L. Peretz and his influence on I. B. Singer. We shall concentrate specifically on Peretz’s seminal ballad Monish as well as certain short stories, comparing and contrasting them with two tales by Singer, and his metatextual commentary on and reworking of Peretz’s themes. Readings will be in Yiddish, with English translation available; class discussion in English and Yiddish. 6 sessions of an hour and fifteen minutes, beginning Sunday 6 June 2021 at 4 PM (EDT) and continuing through Sunday 11 July 2021.
