Yiddish from the beginning! Yiddish Fun Bereshis: (ייִדיש פֿון בראשית)The Yiddish Alef Beys Class for Ultra Beginners!
May 2 a las 11:00 am – Ago 1 a las 11:30 am
Yiddish from the beginning! Yiddish Fun Bereshis: (ייִדיש פֿון בראשית)The Yiddish Alef Beys Class for Ultra Beginners!
Yiddish Fun Bereshis (Yiddish from the beginning) is a Yiddish Alef Beys (alphabet) program aimed for those with no prior Hebrew alphabet experience. We start with vowels, and add on consonants each week. By the end of the first class, the student will be able to read a number of words/phrases.  Each week will build upon the previous week’s material, to begin building one’s Yiddish vocabulary. This class aims to teach literacy – the ability to read Yiddish in Yiddish. There will be some elements of grammar and style – but nothing past a basic/beginners level. Along with “doing the work” of literacy, we will also learn through culture, idioms, jokes, curses, and of course, song. Be prepared for a lot of Simpsons gifs. This is a one-hundred percent no judgement, no attitude, no shaming classroom environment. Class runs 90 minutes. When: Saturdays, 11 a.m, PDT (2 p.m. EDT, 7 p.m. in the UK, 8 p.m. in most of Europe, 9 p.m. in ) Cost: $15 per 90 minute class. Pay at: https://www.paypal.me/YAAANA2020 Link: Zoom link available upon registration. Please email [email protected] or call 619-719-1776. Due to security reasons, all guests must be registered. Instructor: Dave Fried is a dedicated Yiddishist living in Chicago. His main goal is to see more people speaking Yiddish. He has been teaching beginners Yiddish for almost two years. While not immersed in Yiddish, he likes biking, eating noodles, and playing drums.

Yiddish You Can Use
May 28 a las 4:00 pm – 5:00 pm
Speaking Yiddish may be one of the things you’ve always wanted to do. But for whatever reason, you’re just not ready to dig into a textbook. Yet your love of Yiddish remains! Yiddish You Can Use aims to teach you the quality, rich, expressive, idiomatic Yiddish that you crave. You’ll learn beyond “putz and kugl” – with full transliteration and English explanation. No Yiddish experience required at all! You’ll learn a mixture of jokes, blessings and curses. Best of all, you can start using these Yiddish terms right away in your everyday English! Taught by Dave Fried: Dave Fried is a dedicated Yiddishist living in Chicago. He has learned Yiddish in Vilna, Lithuania as well as New York. He has been teaching Yiddish for almost two years – with a special focus on welcoming newcomers to the language. While not knee deep in Yiddish, he likes bike rides, noodles and Jewish punk rock. Class will run about an hour or so – giving time for questions and close with a song! When: Thursday May 28Th 16:00-17:30 PDT Registration: Please email [email protected] or call 619-719-1776.
