At the Faculty of Philological and Cultural Studies of the University of Vienna the position of a University Professor of Yiddish Literary and Cultural Studies (full time, permanent position) is to be filled.

As specified in the University`s Development Plan, the position is to be linked to the research area “Aesthetics and mediality dimensions of communication”.

The successful candidate will cover wide areas of Yiddish literary and cultural studies from the beginning to the end of the long 19th century.


A focus in core areas of philological research, e.g. historical narratology or textual scholarship, is desired. A comparative perspective on the relation between Yiddish tradition and those textual cultures that are focussed on in German studies, is also desired, as well as a focus on Yiddish in the Habsburgian realm with a special emphasis on the situation in Vienna.

The professorship will also establish a curriculum in (West)Yiddish Language, Literature and Culture, that is open especially to those students in philological and historiographical curricula looking for an additional interdisciplinary focus and also offers students in German studies an area of specialization. The professorship will be located at the Department of German Studies. The successful candidate should also have a experience in research and teaching in German Studies and will have to cooperate with different historical or philological disciplines.

It is expected to teach in the developed curriculum of Yiddish as well as in the curricula offered at the Department of German Studies at all levels (Bachelor, Master, PhD), to supervise theses and dissertations, to support young academics and to actively participate in the university’s self-governance.

Successful candidates should have the following qualifications:

· Doctoral degree/PhD and post-doctoral experience at a university or other research institution

Habilitation (venia docendi) in a subject field relevant to this position or an internationally accepted equivalent qualification is desirable.

Outstanding achievements in research, excellent publication record, international reputation Experience in designing, procuring and managing large research projects, as well as the willingness and ability to lead research groups Enthusiasm for excellent teaching, teaching experience at universities as well as the ability and willingness to teach students in all phases of their studies (bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral level), to supervise academic theses and to promoting young academic colleagues.

In addition, the University of Vienna expects the successful candidate to be prepared to take over responsibility on the organisational level of the Faculty and the University, if necessary.
