Events for Ana Simo, Author of Heartland

New York City • Chicago

Heartland is longtime playwright and lesbian activist Ana Simo’s debut novel and a murder mystery turned inside out, mixing the styles of telenovela and pulp noir and set in a dystopian dark mirror of our society. The New York Times Book Review calls it “hilariously absurd and profane”—which seems fitting for our not-so-hilariously absurd and profane times. It’s also a searching exploration of America’s conflicted attitudes toward race, assimilation, and sexual mores. We hope you “heart” it as much as we do! And be sure to catch Ana in person at these upcoming live events.

Events for Shahriar Mandanipour,
Author of Moon Brow

From “one of Iran’s most important living fiction writers” (The Guardian), Shahriar Mandanipour’s Moon Brow is a fantastically imaginative story of love and war narrated by two angel scribes perched on the shoulders of a shell-shocked Iranian soldier who’s searching for the mysterious woman haunting his dreams. More than a decade in the making and brilliantly translated by Sara Khalili, it’s the first novel from Shahriar Mandanipour, whose work has been banned in Iran, since Censoring an Iranian Love Story (Knopf, 2009).

PEN Out Loud: Reimagining a Wrinkle in Time

When: Mar 26, 2018, 7:00pm
Where: Strand Book Store
828 Broadway, New York, NY 10003

Little girls in glasses have showed us how to save the world from darkness for years. The journeys they take as they come into their power showcase their everyday bravery, helping us recognize our own strengths. To mark the release of Ava DuVernay’s bold new adaptation of A Wrinkle in Time, PEN America and the Strand Book Store will celebrate unconventional literary heroes with readings from Madeleine L’Engle’s classic novel and related texts, presenting a canon of unorthodox saviors who invite us to examine the ways we can be heroes too. With award-winning speculative fiction writer Alice Sola Kim; National Book Award-nominated young adult author Ibi Zoboi; and Léna Roy and Charlotte Jones Voiklis, Madeleine L’Engle’s granddaughters and biographers.
