The Yiddish Farm Ulpan Program enables students of all ages and backgrounds to speak and understand enough Yiddish to have conversations, understand lectures, and read Yiddish texts. Yiddish is learned from fluent and native Yiddish-speakers in the classroom, the kitchen, the farm, the cabin, the shul, the dining room, the forest and the library.

Although no prior Yiddish knowledge is required, students are expected to complete 10 interactive online Yiddish lessons at www.yiddishpop.com before the program. After completing these 10 lessons, students will be adequately prepared to speak Yiddish from the first day of the program.

4.  Must I speak Yiddish the entire time? What if this is my first time learning Yiddish?

Since this is an intensive language immersion program, students are expected to speak Yiddish at all programmed times, unless specifically stated otherwise. For this program to effectively enable students to walk away being able to speak Yiddish, it is important for students to commit to speaking Yiddish as much as they can. These free interactive lessons will give students the necessary tools to communicate in Yiddish from the first day of the program.

5. What happens during the weekend?

The program continues throughout the weekend. There will be traditional shabbos services and festive meals on Friday night and Saturday. All classes that take place during the Sabbath will be shabbos-friendly, which means no writing or computers. We try to create an atmosphere that is comfortable for people of various backgrounds, while adhering to modern Orthodox Jewish law.  For more information on Sabbath observance at Yiddish Farm, feel free to write us at [email protected]
