Most rabbis earn modest salaries – certainly nothing to write home about, though what they do for the community often is. However, a certain rabbinical dynasty is making headlines today as Rabbi Pinchas Abuhatzeira was named Forbes Israel’s wealthiest rabbi.
At the top of Forbes list, the 36-year-old Rabbi has an estimated net worth of $367 million. His worth is more than twice that of the Bur Rebbe who is second on the list.
Pinchas is the great-grandson of revered miracle worker Baba Sali and the son of murdered Rabbi Elazar Abuchatzeira, and it is from these men that the Jewish Daily Forward says Pinchas inherited much of his wealth and following.
Naming his father a “giant among giants,” Rabbi Pinchas accepted the appointment to replace his father when the rabbi was stabbed to death by one of his followers in 2011.
According to Haaretz, Rabbi Pinchas is relatively unknown – a trait then MK David Azulai (Shas) attributes to living in “off-the-beaten-track places.”
Of the Rabbis Abuchatzeira, Azulai say that Baba Sali’s descendants “just want to serve the Jewish people without fanfare in the merit of their forebears.”
Forbes also names an uncle and a cousin to Pinchas on their top ten list, and according to Forward, another uncle was on the list last year. Two members of the Ifargan family make the list as well, as do two Hasidic leaders.
