3 Mexican journalists win prestigious Pulitzer Prize in 2013

Three Mexican journalists have won 2013 Pulitzer Prizes: Alejandra Xanic von Bertrab, for Investigative Reporting of corruption in Wal-Mart´s expansion in Mexico; Javier Manzano for Feature Photography of photos of Syrian rebel soldiers; and Narciso Contreras for breaking news photography of the war in Syria. The Pulitzer Prize for investigative reporting was awarded to David Barstow and Alejandra Xanic von Bertrab of The New York Times for reporting on how Wal-Mart used widespread bribery to dominate the market in Mexico, resulting in changes in company practices.

Von Bertrab is a freelance journalist working out of Mexico City. She and Barstow also previously won a George Polk Award for their Wal-Mart reporting.

Freelance photojournalist Javier Manzano took the award for feature photography for what the Pulitzer judges called “his extraordinary picture” of two Syrian rebel soldiers guarding their position as beams of light shine through bullet holes in a metal wall beside them.

Narciso Contreras

Narciso Contreras Pulitzer Prize winnerNarciso Contreras, a Mexican freelance photographer, shared the prize for breaking news photography with Rodrigo Abd, Manu Brabo, Khalil Hamra and Muhammed Muheisen. Contreras had several breaking news photographs that were recognized by the Pulitzer judges. His photographs were distributed by the Associated Press.
