Largest ever ETA explosives haul found by police

The largest ever haul of ETA explosives has been made by the Spanish police following the arrest of the brothers Aitor and Igor Esnaola. The two were arrested in the town of Legorreta, in the Tolosa area of Guipúzcoa, and it was in a local country house where the explosives have been found.

Between 850 and 900 kilos of explosives has been recovered, most of it ammonium nitrate and PETN which is from the nitro-glycerine family.

The two are now known to be members of an ETA logistical unit named ‘Erreka’, which the Ministry of the Interior considers has been active for at least nine years, but the two arrested men were not on police files themselves. They are thought to have been distributing explosives, arms and other materials to other ETA cells.
Documentation found at the scene is being studied and could give clues as to possible targets.

The Government has thanked the security services for their work in the case, and say they do not contemplate the possibility of an attack, and neither do they consider a split in ETA has taken place.

‘We are not going to speculate what ETA may have in the head’, said José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, who went on to say, speaking in Beijing, that the Basque terrorist group was ‘weaker than ever’.
