An internal report prepared by Israel’s Foreign Ministry calls for more international sanctions against Iran, an Israeli official confirmed on Thursday.
The report appeared to be a rare acknowledgment by Israel that more time may still be available to try to stop the Iranian nuclear program without using military action, The New York Times reports.
Specifics of the report were leaked to the Israeli liberal Haaretz daily and were published on Thursday as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was en route to New York to address the United Nations General Assembly, The Times reports.
An Israeli official who was familiar with the report, but was not authorized to speak on it publicly, confirmed to The Times the points that appeared in Haaretz.
The Foreign Ministry report states that the international sanctions already imposed on Iran affecting the country’s economy deeply – and possibly the stability of the Iranian government, The Times reports.
The sanctions, however, have not yet persuaded the government in Tehran to suspend its nuclear efforts.
Therefore, the report concluded, “another round of sanctions is needed,” the Israeli official told The Times.
