In a unique move, Allen Stanford attempted to turn himself in at the federal courthouse in Houston today.
“We want to surrender him into custody,” DeGuerin told the U.S. Marshal’s office.
Stanford stood nearby, his company insignia eagle pin on his lapel, according to the Houston Chronicle .
“We’re doing this to show he’s not running,” said DeGuerin. “He’ll face whatever they’ve got for him.”
“If they have something for me,” Stanford added, indicating he might not be indicted.
According to the Chronicle, DeGuerin said he wanted to avoid a “perp walk” where an accused person is placed in handcuffs and escorted before the media.
“A perp walk will be adverse to his right to a fair trial,” said DeGuerin.
Speculation abounds on Stanford’s and DeGeurin’s reasoning behind this move. Either the move was a publicity stunt, or an effort to push the U.S. Justice Department to issue a warrant they aren’t ready to come forward with, for whatever reason that may be. It could also be a move to release funds for Stanford’s defense as the U.S. laws protecting the right to a legal defense are stronger if the subject has been arrested and/or in custody. There’s no doubt Stanford had ulterior motives for this kind of tactic.
