Venice was a multicultural bastion for writers, even prior to the influx of Jews from Eastern Europe after World War II. Yiddish poets had a significant presence in the area. One of them, Dora Bayrack, is immortalized with her poem of the immigrant Jew on the wall of the Israel Levin Center on the Venice Boardwalk.
