Entirely in Yiddish, a first for Canadian film, The Pin is a powerful debut from director Naomi Jaye. Jacob, a Jewish Shomer who guards the bodies of the departed awaiting burial, keeps vigil in a morgue, weighted with regrets and lost futures, not least his own. But when he suddenly comes face to face with his long lost first love, Leah he is given a chance to revisit his youth and the crossroads of his life. Remembering their meeting, thrown together by war as they hid in a barn to escape the Nazis, Jacob relives their desperation and love. This unexpected reunion offers him closure of his own lost dreams, when he is able to fulfill a promise he made a half century earlier. To prick Leah’s hand with a pin before she is buried to ensure she is truly dead.
