Entrevista al Director de “The Walt Disney Company”
“Entrevista a Robert (Bob) Iger, Disney CEO, Director de The Walt Disney Company.
A mi…

Interview With Bob Iger
Monday, September 19, 2016
10:59 AM
A.N. We were talking about BB-8, A great invention, a robot, droid. ¿Is it a robot, machine or droid? What is the difference between these definitions in this contexto you were talking about?
B.I. It is all three. She is Robotic, she’s a Robot. She has a purpose so she is a machine and she’s a beloved character in the Star Wars Universe and that Character is a droid.
A.N. So, you tell me BB-8 is a female, ¿what do you mean? ¿Can droids be male and females? ¿Could you give us the full picture?
B.I. Yes droids can be male or female; not in the same sense as gender for humans though. See droids are programmed. If you remember in Phantom Menace when Qui Gon Grim and Obi One were waiting for trade negotiations the droid that came in with drinks was female. BB-8 doesn’t distinctly look or sound female but she’s always been a Tomboy to me in that aspect and because as a child I loved Punky Brewster and I loved the Beastie Boys. So I named her after the Beastie Boys and their 8 albums; she is a Tomboy droid, don’t underestimate her.
A.N. ¿How does it feel Star Wars moving address from Lucas Films by George Lucas to Disney productions? ¿How did it affect you?
B.I. Well let’s be clear, it has never left Lucasfilms. Lucasfilm has and will always be where you turn to tell the story of Star Wars. Disney is simply the best to allow the Star Wars franchise to get with the audience it deserves it and guarantee it always does. I am thrilled to know it is safe.
A.N. We all felt Disney is back, is a great comeback to Disney and Star Wars to the public and audience conscience. Can you tell us the big plans only mentioned in Disney small rooms?
B.I. Hold on to your seats.
A.N. What are Disney plans for Star Wars in every aspect, as a film, as T.V. development, as reading materials like books and so on? Is Disney considering to input a lot of new characters from the Light side and Dark side in this new epic saga development?
B.I. Plans? Lots of plans, you know that I cannot tell you that ;).
A.N. About Rey, it’s been a mystery for network readers, in posts, comments, articles, essays … everywhere … So who is Rey really? What is her family background? Is she a Ren, a Skywalker, a Kenobi? ¿Who are her parents? People talk all kinds of options. ¿What will be “the about to reveal” relation between Rey and Luke?
B.I. REY? Rey is…You’ll have to watch it!!!
A.N. ¿What about Finn? Who is Finn? What is his real name? Who are his parents?
B.I. Finn? Let’s just say that they are not strangers to the Star Wars Universe blood lines.
A.N. Is Star Wars a family drama film about some leading families in the Galaxy?
B.I. No Stars is a family opera. I don’t like using Soap Opera because it sounds to cliché but first and foremost it’s a poetic opera about good and evil; the things we go through we go through as a family and the hero in all of us.
Let‘s talk about Disney and technology
A.N. What is in the near future? When the Star Wars section will be ready? How will it be designed and treat? What life forms will be seen or space creatures will be there? Are there going to be many new roller coasters? Is it going to be in California or Florida or both at the same time? How many square meters field will be used by Star Wars? How many new attractions will come up? Are you personally involved in the games or atractions, area design, architecture, technological design, and to what extent if so?
B.I. The Star Wars section opening date has not been set, but construction has started at both parks. It will be an immersive world of known and unknown life forms and droids. I am truly excited for this chapter in the Star Wars legacy.
…We are calling 14 acre parks at both Disney theme parks with two new rides each park and many attractions. I am involved as much as I can, that will never change. It’s all personal to me because Walt Disney has always been my Idol. I want distil values in what Disney means…
I at heart am a story teller, I don’t just write, I paint a picture with a story and draw characters, sets and themes; but just like all others they are not all used.
A.N. How deep are you involved in Disney or Star Wars characters, scenarios, spaceships, artifacts, new props, design and development.
B.I. We all collaborated on T.F.A. though the stories outline came from me, and approved by George years ago before production. With that outline J.J. Abrams, Lawrence Kasdin, Michael Arndt, Kathleen Kennedy, Filoni, Hildalgo and I discussed how’s and whys; we all worked together to bring everything to life.
A.N. ¿Do you follow for long time Walt Disney spirit by drawing pictures of characters or games or attractions? Do you develop some characters as tech droids with real materials too as an engineer? How have you spent your time or view the new Disney development? Are you exclusively involved in the Star Wars topic? So you are the master of some of these character creations that you designed and developed correct?
B.I. I, like Walt, am an artist. Its where this connection of his dream emulates. I couldn’t stop drawing and creating even if I tried. I draw ships characters, weapons, helmets, so on and so forth; not all make the cut however. When you are a Star Wars fan you cannot remove that. So the child in you won’t let you not be involved when you can. I don’t exclusively work on Star Wars because there are so many ideas in my head and worlds and stories that I want to share with the world. I helped with BB-8 and her concepts. Ian Bernstien and I headed the project and I funded him; but Orbotix and Sphero teams did the rest. Neil Scanlan, Lee Towerzee, Oliver Steeples and Matthew Denton were the guys for the full scale version. I designed many of the character for not only Star Wars T.F.A. and so on but I also worked creating Star Wars Rebels with Dave Filoni and Pablo Hildalgo; as well as concepts for Rogue One.
Future of Disney
A.N. ¿What is your view on the future of Disney? Is Disney more of a success as a park, or as an entertainment media company and content producer?
B.I. We are always striving to create innovative ideas and amazing adventures, for all families and will continue to do so. I would like to give back to the communities and always put families and children first. As an American Company do what we can to better our country and others.
A.N. Star Wars is getting new lines in development and new films, new dramas, new epic wars, how are these decisions being made?
..
For example, ¿Were you involved in Rogue One and how? Can you tell us more previews about Rogue One?
B.I. I did concept art for Rogue One including K-250. I cannot tell you about Rogue One … you’ll have to watch it.
A.N. Besides Rogue One, are there many other Star Wars lines being developed for films, T.V. sagas or other shows?
B.I. There are lots on the horizon for Star Wars. Each needs it’s time and love, I will say there are some on the table.
A.N. ¿How seriously is Disney or the Star Wars franchise are going to be involved in VR or 3D new developments?
B.I. Well, we would not be Disney if we weren’t on the forefront. As technology changes so do the ways we can use it as a platform for adventure.
A.N. ¿Is The Walt Disney company teaching animation arts somewhere? ¿Does Disney have a school? Can any foreigner student apply, at what levels?
B.I. It would not be Disney without learning. Disney has always been continuously interested in education and we offer our programs such as the Disney College program. The Disney Institute is an integral part of the Walt Disney Company.
Droids
A.N. You told me you love droids, to design them, to create them, to piano them …
A.N. ¿Is it very different to create a droid in today’s era than from what is was 10-20-30 years ago? Are most of the droids appearances in Star Wars or other Disney movies today are mainly visual effects, or computer animation? Or are they still models? Can you tell us some new revelations about robotics in Disney context? Are droids as advanced as shown in sci-fi movies?
B.I. Imagination is imagination during any era. That is the only limit. All droids in Star Wars are real, tangible, you can touch them except in areas where it is not possible. Today what doesn’t seem too advanced would seem alien to people in the 30’s.
A.N. Do droids have personalities? Based on what? Are they designed to be good or bad? How are they designed to look, move and sound? Give us an example with BB-8.
B.I. All droids have personalities. Droids are programmed for the sake of the owner. So their personalities depends on who their owner is. Mechanics of the droid vary on the situation and the needed effect. BB-8 and her process is how I’ve always done it. I thought of her shape as a child. The Star Wars story needed to continue to carry on and creating her was the next logical step. After I draw a character I get a feel for how they should act, move around and sound. I create a back story to each droid and character and go from there. It is an art for sure and one of the best parts; you get to bring the character to life.
A.N. Are there meetings between the designers, visual creators, robotic engineers, and sound engineers, and all the involved creators of the robots?
B.I. There are lots of meetings. Every day, everyone involved in bouncing ideas in the Industry.
A.N. Not so long ago, Kenny Baker, the human actor of R2-D2 from the first sagas, passed away. Was announced in all media. Did you work with him or were you in touch with him? Is the human actor a big influence on a droid idea?
¿Does BB-8 have a human actor, if so male or female, behind?
B.I. I did meet Kenny Baker, only once however; I wish I could say it was more. BB-8’s voice was recorded by others and I. BB-8 has always been a female to me. Emotional more so than a male counterpart. As a character creator being male or female is not always what is most important. BB-8 was created before the screen play. But then Kathleen Kennedy helped with Reys gender. It was her influence and a perfect choice. You’ll have to watch what is coming!
A.N. Do you prefer to start a picture of a droid or character on a computer or tablet, or handmade on simple pages.
B.I. Hand drawn always; that is how I do it and it is what I love.
Inspiration
A.N. ¿What`s your main inspiration? ¿What leads you in your work as Disney CEO?
B.I. Great story and great ideas which come from all forms of humanity, we are always multi-cultural and that is the American standard.
A.N. ¿About future relations with Mexico and Mexico´s entrepreneurs pitching for Disney?
B.I. On the Topic of Mexico, I´ll love to talk with you about it, we´ll do it next month, we hope to develop and to work with thousands of Mexican entrepreneurs, platforms and channels, developers and magicians of business and creation. We´ll love to get involve as much as possible and that will be further discussed in personal ways.
…
